It may seem the purchase process in business is not far away from its B2C marketing counterpart. The digital transformation has revolutionized the habits of consumers, who are bringing their private practices to work. Customers’ independence in finding information has increased, and this also concerns B2C as well as B2B. So in order to tell the differences, we need to take a closer look at each stage of the buyer’s journey:

  1. Recognizing a need – in business, the impulse to make a purchase can come from people who do not have the decisive voice in making the final decision; it can also result from the analysis of the market situation or competition’s actions.
  2. Finding a solution – the need is defined in detail and is presented to the board, who either accept or reject it.
  3. Analyzing suppliers and their offers – people responsible for making the purchase start looking for detailed information about the companies offering given products or solutions; after collecting enough information they go through a consulting phaze (internal and/or with independent experts), and compare the offers using various criteria, such as e.g. price, correspondence with buyer’s needs, service conditions.
  4. Making a decision – after comparing the offers, one of the suppliers is chosen; the next step is signing an agreement, which can concern a one-time transaction or be long-term.
  5. Post-purchase relations – the purchased product or solution is implemented in the company; the relation with the supplier is usually continued throughout the service and may lead to further orders.

The greatest difficulty for a B2B content marketers is to create content, which not only answers the questions popping out at each stage of the buyer’s journey, but also take into consideration the differences between the people asking these questions, that is different buyer personas. Different things will be interesting to e.g. the head of IT and a financial director or the CEO. To be effective, it’s worth using content mapping. It’s a method allowing to adjust content to a given purchase stage, and to a given persona. It works like a matrix:

  1. For each stage of the buyer’s journey we define a type of content (e.g. education, analysis, comparison) and the respective formats (e.g. blog entry, booklet, webinar or white paper).
  2. In the next step we introduce personas (e.g. CEO, manager, content expert) and link them with particular stages of the purchase process.
  3. Finally, we attach each persona with specific goals and define the content types and the formats used.
